As a song from ‘Les Mis’ begins, there was a day in times gone by when hope was high and life worth living.” That’s how I feel with stay-at-home pandemic dressing. I’ve seen online posts from friends about daytime pajamas versus nighttime pajamas! Track pants were something for early mornings outside with the dog.

I hunger to dress up! To actually spend some time picking out what goes better with what?! Who isn’t longing to pull out a glittery long dress or a crisp evening shirt and jacket?

Most days during this time I’ve shaved and put on jeans and a polo shirt. But I didn’t really care if it looked ok; I just did it to maintain my routine. But the thought of really putting in effort is a sort of “why bother?” We should put thought into it, as dressing up really transforms how we feel and think.

As this situation stretches on into summer, we will slide into shorts and tank tops. But will we dress up? I’ve been thinking that we should all set up dress-up virtual cocktail parties to keep us in practice! Or pick a weeknight where you and your quarantine partner or household dress up for dinner! I think the mental anticipation of playing dress up might be a mood elevator.

We worked for years in offices with casual Fridays. Maybe now is the time to create ‘Formal Fridays’ at home! Hopefully sooner than later we will get to go out to dressy events again. As someone who sometimes dreaded red carpet events, I’m actually looking forward to finding a step-and-repeat to stop in front of! Those first few black tie parties will feel like our first.

I can only imagine how strange it will be to rush out to a waiting Uber dressed up. I’m just hoping my tuxedo pants will still fit by then!
